NFPA 1901

What is the NFPA 1901? The NFPA 1901 is the standard for automotive fire apparatus and sets the guidelines for what types of high visibility safety apparel must be kept in these vehicles.

It says that a minimum of an ANSI-207 compliant 5 Point Break-Away vest must be included for every seat on that vehicle.

Currently ANSI-207 is not recognized as a compliant garment by the 23 CFR Part 634 so in order to be compliant under both NFPA 1901 and 23 CFR Part 634 the vest must be labeled with both ANSI 207 & ANSI-107 labels.

If the ANSI 207 specification is accepted by the MUTCD then the vest for the NFPA 1901 will only have to have an ANSI 207 label in it.

It is also being recommended that ANSI-207 compliant vests be added as an option to the MUTCD to be worn by public safety personnel.
